The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the right to contest particular rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
